The new film, helmed by the creator of Euphoria, is officially recognized as the first feature filmed to finish production during the pandemic. Malcolm & Marie is off to great start.
As reported by S&A, the filming started on June 17 and wrapped up by July 2. Production took place at the Caterpillar House in Carmel, CA, which is deemed as a marvelous environmentally sound glass house. This location is completely compliant with all SAF-AFTRA, WGA and DGA approvals. Most importantly, it adheres to all proper COVID-19 safety protocols.
Malcolm & Marie has an interesting origin story. It started with the cancellation of Euphoria’s second season on March 16. Apparently afterwards, Zendaya called creator Sam Levison and exclaimed interest in creating in him creating a movie about the pandemic.
In only six days, Levinson created the movie concept. In a helpful turn, Levison deemed BlacKkKlansman star John Washington as a great fit opposite Zendaya.
Another interesting fact for the Malcolm & Marie is the funding. Levison, along with wife Ashley (co-EP of Queen & Slim), producer Kevin Turen, John Washington, and Zendaya. Kid Cudi is also listed as an investor and joins Zendaya, Washington, and several others as executive producers.
While there are no leads on the premise, it is said to follow the recent Netflix remake Marriage Story. The tone was made to fit with social themes the world has been experiencing through COVID-19.
There’s something to be said that a film like Malcolm & Marie. Starring two Black Hollywood heavyweights with pandemic themes made right during the height of the BLM protests; think of the optics. Such a story make invoke a strong brand of emotions that needed catering to at the moment.
Also, when Zendaya wants you to know something, she’s more than happy to do so with minimal effort.
