Cosmetic adverts featuring airbrushed images of actress Julia Roberts and model Christy Turlington have been banned by the advertising watchdog.
Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson complained that the L’Oreal adverts were “not representative of the results the products could achieve”.
The Advertising Standards Authority agreed that the images were exaggerated and breached its code of conduct.
L’Oreal admitted retouching but denied that the two adverts were misleading.
Well this isn’t news really. But I can appreciate the the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) stepping in and telling companies to stop exaggerating their products. I understand wanting to promote your product as much as possible but lying about the results or using
celebs models that might now even had the same issues the product is promoting is deceiving and it promotes tremendous amount of pressure that is based on a lie.
“If advertisers go too far in using airbrushing and other post-production techniques to alter the appearance of models and it’s likely to mislead people, then that’s wrong and we’ll stop the ads,” states
Guy Parker, chief executive of the Advertising Standards Authority.
Companies shouldn’t have to lie to push a product, if the product works it will almost sell itself (in beauty terms of course)
