Support Black girls in comics: Roxane Gay

The New York Times best-selling author and writer has been adding her talents to the comic book world. In 2017, Gay gave us World Of Wakanda where we followed Ayo and Aneka as they navigate their responsibilities to Wakanda and each other. Even though though the book was canceled, Gay laid down some important storytelling that gave readers a better insight on the Dora Milaje. World Of Wakanda also won the GLAAD Media Award For Outstanding Comic Book.

But Gay doesn’t just shine when writing mainstream superheroes, she’s just as brilliant in her other graphic novels. The Banks and Sacrifice Of Darkness are two graphic novels that makes book readers appreciate art with their reading and encourages comic book readers to appreciate a text heavy comic.

In her graphic novel The Banks, Gay writes a crime story that is fueled with revenge against a cold-blooded killer who killed a mastermind thief whose family is destroyed by his senseless killing.

Gay has found the perfect balance to bring traditional book readers and graphic novel fans together in harmony. Graphic novel readers will appreciate the art and the reading which leaves you full. Literary fiction fans will appreciate not sacrificing a story and details for art. Gay has the gift to have the best of both worlds.

While Gay isn’t writing romance specifically, she doesn’t shy away from creating Black love, especially Black queer love in her stories. She gives her women protagonists power and wit and the worlds she builds are relatable.
