Goliath Is Us: Creator of Gargoyles Interested In Working With Jordan Peele
When you think of the hit classic 90’s cartoon Gargoyles, you’ve got a hefty checklist of memories: sci-fi, knights in armor, flying castles, a Black Native American female cop, and a dog-beast named Bronx. How could you possibly make these things better? Not sure, but if you add Jordan Peele to the mix, the possibilities have just grown infinite.
According to Greg Weisman in an interview with Polygon, the creator of Gargoyles, there may have actually been a time where Jordan Peele pitched a live-action movie version of the acclaimed series to Disney. Should this ring true, Weisman is not holding back on his feelings about heading back to work to pair up with the new horror master himself.
“My understanding — not inside information, just my understanding — is that he expressed an interest in the property. And Disney didn’t say no. But by not saying yes, that answers the question. You know, they didn’t want to say no to Jordan Peele, but they also didn’t want to say yes to Gargoyles. So it just didn’t go anywhere.”
Weisman did reach out to Peele on Twitter, just to introduce himself.
I think it’s accurate that he was interested, but I can’t speak to how far those conversations went. I touched base with him on Twitter, just saying, “Hey, I don’t know if you know who I am…” And he’s like, “I do know who you are!” That was gratifying, but that’s as far as it went, you know? I don’t want to overstate it, it was like, he’s Jordan fucking Peele, and I’m Greg Weisman!
It’s fair to say while what options Disney may provide in terms of a future for Gargoyles is up in the air, there is a genuine interest from Weisman to see a return. The idea of a live-action movie with Peele at the helm definitely inspires hope.
I’d like to think — I don’t know this, I want to make that clear — that he’d still be interested in doing something with it if a new opportunity arose. I can’t say for sure if that’s true, I have no idea. But I would hope so. I’m a huge fan of his. Should he read this article, I would love to work with him. But I don’t know how realistic that is
To further the irony, Weisman is not the only original who’d love to return to the series. Keith David, known famously as the voice of Goliath, expressed to Comicbook in 2019, his own desire to return to his formative role.
“[We’ve wondered] why we haven’t come back to a reboot,” the actor told us. “I mean, I would love nothing more than to revisit Goliath. You know, he was absolutely one of my very, very, very, very favorite characters. I’ve always maintained that when I grow up, I want to be like Goliath.”
Fingers crossed that in a post-Rona world, our favorite living statues might see the light of day again.
