Must-Have Sapphic September Reads For 2024
Here are a few 2024 sapphic book releases to add to your TBR.
Since it is Sapphic September, I figured I’d offer you a solid list of some of my favorite sapphic reads for 2024. While this isn’t a complete list of all the sapphic books to be released this year, it certainly helps as a starting point. First, what is Sapphic September and why am I the last to know? According to Google, Sapphic September is a month-long readathon where readers post photos and videos of their favorite sapphic reads. According to the website it was created by two friends; Landice (aka ManicFemme) and Lexi (aka EvilQueenReads).
Again, this isn’t a complete list of sapphic books that were released (or will be released this year) but it’s a running list to add more books to your TBR. For your convenience, I’ve added both adult and young adult titles because who doesn’t love a meet-cute sapphic YA story? Now, go add these to your bookshelves and next year you won’t get caught slipping for Sapphic September like me.
Adult
We Came To Welcome You by Vincent Tiradao
Kick off your fall with a creepy, psychological suburban, sapphic horror from author Vincent Tirado. Sol Reyes and her wife finally decide to move to Maneless Grove; a suburban community. Sol is looking to regroup after the incident at her university. But their neighborhood HOA is uncomfortably strange…
Lavish At First Sight by Taleen Voskuni
Ellie works in tech and she is fed up with her co-workers, industry and her annoying ex-boyfriend who she also works with. However, her family has big plans and wants to win the chance for an ad spot in the Super Bowl for their food business in Chicago. While there, Ellie meets another Armenian whose family also has a food business and the two hit it off. However, she soon discovers her newest beau is the daughter of a rival family who are longtime competitors with Ellie’s family. Food can be so sexy, so this enemies-to-lovers sapphic tale is equally captivating and delicious.
A Vicious Game: The Halfling Saga by Melissa Blair
Ready to dive into a sapphic romantasy series that has morally grey characters? Follow Keera as she encounters magic, enemies and demons while tapping into her ancestral magic. We love a messy, sapphic main character.
Leather, Lace and Locs by Anne Shade
I discovered Shade almost by accident when I came across her book Masquerade and I’ve been a fan ever since. Her books are extra spicy but she knows how to write a great story that feels real and makes Black and BIPOC feel seen. This book follows three friends who are all taking chances and exploring life on their terms while navigating their intersections in society.
The Lovers by Rebekah Faubion
Readers who enjoy second-chance romance with a bit of contemporary feel will enjoy this sapphic tale. Mixing influencers with want-to-be spiritual girlies can lead to disaster but this has a delightful tone with some laughs.
The 7-10 Split by Karmen Lee
Here’s a friends-to-rivals-to-lovers that has a sports angle. Ava is a teacher who loves bowling and not many can out-bowl her except her former friend who she shared a kiss with. Now that they are working together at the same school, they will be working on their school’s bowling team. Spark fly, but this is a slow burn, perfect for those who love steamy anticipation.
I’ll Be Gone For Christmas by Georgia K. BooneÂ
Who doesn’t love a sapphic holiday romance? Two women plan a getaway using a house-swap app called Vacate to escape their everyday lives. While living in each others’ homes, they get to explore life with refreshed eyes. Even though this book is short, this dual-romance will keep you entertained. Get into this cute, Christmas, sapphic story that reads like a delightful Hallmark romance but with Black sapphics!
Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne
Here’s a cozy fantasy that includes tea! Reyna and Kianthe have big plans to operate a bookshop with a dreamy tea menu. The problem is Reyna works for the Queen as one of her guards and now she’s a hostage. Now Kianthe feels that they both have an out to flee to make their dreams come true but the path to freedom isn’t free or easy.
YA
Thirsty by Jas Hammonds
Hammonds is on my auto-buy list because I still think about We Deserve Monuments often, which is their debut. In this book, Blake and her girlfriend join a sorority with hopes of building a stronger future for themselves. Emotional, yet realistic, these characters explore classism, identity and addiction. Perfect for mature young readers or adults who enjoy emotional, heavy-hitting YA books.
This Ravenous Fate by Hayley Dennings
Arguably one of the best YA’s to debut this summer, this book gives you everything you want. Layla and Elise, once close friends, are now enemies because one of them is a vampire and one is the heir to a vampire hunter. It’s dark, and passionate because it’s set during the Harlem Renaissance and the atmosphere engulfs you. This is an enemies-to-lover you can feel and there’s an unexpected mystery plot with forced proximity. Perfect for readers who enjoy the comic Bitter Root and the television series Buffy.
Wish You Weren’t Here by Erin Baldwin
Here’s a tongue-in-cheek summer camp teen romance that will give you nostalgia. Priya is the seemingly almost perfect, popular girl and Juliette does everything she can to avoid her. Her only safe space besides her home in this small town is and Fogridge Sleepaway Camp. But that changes when Priya not only shows up but is also assigned to be her cabinmate for five weeks.
Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan and illustrated by Kit Seaton
Bet you didn’t know that you needed a sapphic werewolf graphic novel in your life, right? Tessa is a senior in high school who is in love with her best friend. But like most teens, Tessa struggles with identity issues. She doesn’t want to be a werewolf, especially since her family makes her feel like an outcast for not being able to fully transform yet. Tessa jumps at the opportunity to be able to turn into a full human with a promising new treatment but finds out this treatment does more harm than good.
Spells To Forget Us by Aislinn Brophy
What happens when a witch and a reluctant influencer can’t help but love each other in almost every timeline? Luna is a powerful witch who doesn’t want the responsibilities of being part of her ancestral witch council. Aoife just wants space to be herself without her parents trying to monetize every moment. But for Aoife and Luna to be together, Luna has to cast a spell on her to erase her memory if they ever break up. After they break up, neither remembers the other until they see each other again. It’s very cutesy.
A Banh Mi for Two by Trinity Nguyen
Nothing sets the fall mood like love and food and this sapphic teen romance will make your heart swoon. This Vietnamese love story highlights two Vietnamese girls; ViVi, an aspiring American writer studying abroad. She meets Lan who runs the popular food blog A Bánh Mì for Two and together they connect over food, culture, and love.
