Celebrate the Brooklyn Way: “Donuts are Forever 6” Tribute to J Dilla

Typically, I shy away from music posts and blogging because I feel it is over saturated I know, I know like beauty isn’t right? but for the past two weeks I have been ecstatic about the “Donuts are Forever 6” party at the Brooklyn Bowl. This was my first J Dilla tribute party and I loved it!

All the music I love and soul beats that I listen to everyday in my headphones and in my heart were produced by James Yancey better known as J Dilla, Jay Dee or J Period. Erykah Badu ( Didn’t Ya Know), Common ( The Questions), Dwele, Slum Village, Q- Tip ( Vibrant Thing) and A Tribe Called Quest ( Find A Way) are just a few of the many, many songs he produced in his career. J Dilla died from complications of lupus just days after his birthday and the release of his album “Donuts”.

Prince Paul and Neil Armstrong did amazing tributes and the vibe of the entire party was super dope. I felt like I was extremely young again and it put me in a place when I was too young to party but somehow I was able to sneak into hip hop parties back in Chicago ( by the way J Dilla is also from the midwest- Detroit). It was a great feeling.
