No, black women are NOT protesting Marvel’s Black Panther, so STFU please

This is what we are doing for the New Year? Oh, Word? Seriously, the first time I heard it I knew it sounded off but I paid it no attention. But now I’m seeing sites like NewsOne, AJC.com, and BET “report” about the alleged backlash over this rumored boycott. I jumped on Twitter to find the source of this “boycott” and I found this tweet.

First, I rolled my eyes as the evil Kermit of myself was telling me these are just bitter Birth of A Nation fans who were still mad that their girlfriends are going to see Black Panther without them. The original source is an unverified Twitter user that has Twitter as their job description. The “source” they posted was from another unverified “fan page” of Michael B. Jordan that has an average of 5 likes per post of the alleged boycott. I guess it was a slow media day with the SnowQueenpocalypse and nobody had anything else to talk about.

The subject of this conversation is actor Michael B. Jordan who is playing Erik Killmonger. It’s been rumored he’s dating interracially and nobody cares except for this one “fan page” that someone posted about on Twitter a few days. Twitter is filled with #FakeNews but I think the most mind-boggling thing about this is the amount of black-centered media platforms that picked it up and ran with it. I mean, not one staff member bothered to pry a little bit before posting this bogus story? Why must black women be the butt of jokes and be burden with the angry black girl stereotype? Black Panther has so much #BlackGirlMagic that we don’t care who is dating who! What we do care about is making sure Hollywood understands that black films can be just as successful as their typical white counterparts and we want to see them succeed.

My first thought was why would anyone retweet a low-engaging, vague fan page as a credible source? The Instagram user could be anyone from anywhere reposting images of Jordan’s pic for vanity followers. I mean at least repost a gossip blog account, but a random account? Sounds fishy. I went to the Instagram page and the account has about 500 photos of Jordan’s pics. The last several posts on this suspect IG account have been trying to push this imaginary boycott. There are so many things wrong with this entire situation. First of all, what would black women be protesting? Unless Jordan has spewed some anti-blackness or misogynoir, I fail to see what the issue is here. Seeing that the hoteps/Ankh-Right are skipping down the same path with the Alt-Right it makes sense to me at least that the fan page account is being run and or operated by a male. Sounds weird but it’s probable. I then searched the tweets of the person who just happened to tweet the “source”.

Mhmmh. Yeah, something in this milk ain’t clean but it didn’t deter these media outlets from running with it:

And not just that, most of the sites pulled the same tweets to support their story. It’s like nobody even tried to see if the story was true. They just took a hypothetical situation and some fake outrage from Twitter at used that as an excuse to blame black women – which I find to be pretty sad. The thing I find really bothersome is it pokes fun at black women that actually mobilize online to boycott and do other social justice initiatives. It’s basically implying that black women boycott any and everything and use social media as their voice to discourage others. But isn’t it that sorta basic? Could you imagine the society we would be living in if every black woman protested everything that did not involve or center us? Can you imagine if we boycotted every entertainer, influencer, athlete and artist that weren’t romantically involved with black women? O.J. Simpson wouldn’t even have a career if that were the case. Seriously. Also, women tend to not be the physically invested in celebrities like men tend to be – not saying that it can’t or doesn’t happen because a fan is a fan – a fucking fanatic; but the idea that black women will collectively boycott a film with Lupita and MUVA ANGLEA BASSETT is just the most absurd thing I’ve read this year and we aren’t even a solid week into the new yet.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist but I think this is a fake ass story, created by a man to make black women look bad just for fun. Black women are anticipating this movie just like the rest of yall and you want to know how I know? I find it sad and infuriating that black-centering media would run this story at the expense of black women just to generate hits but hey, that’s capitalism for you. I find it more alarming at the tweets they just decided to run with. Most of the tweets were from men (that ran in these stories) comparing other celebrities like Serena Williams and Megyn Kelly ( which isn’t the same but whatever). It’s like they decided that black women were being too happy and decided to kick off the new year by being ashy. Ok, bro. My daddy used to always tell me to consider the source, and per the gallery of the person who posted the IG “boycott”, I’d say this is 4Chan scum.
