The trailer for the movie, Empire Waist will hit you straight in the heart if you were a plus-size teen with an eye for fashion. According to the official website, the movie is about an artistic, but insecure plus-size teen who prefers to hide her hidden talents. She’s also friends with another plus-size girl named Kayla, who is the ying to her yang. Kayla is vivacious and embraces her body as it is instead of how it isn’t. Together they both navigate a fatphobic world that impacts socially and personally. Blue Fox Entertainment is the distributor.

The fall season is the perfect time to catch some quality films, especially chick flicks. While this is more of a coming-of-age dramedy, it is more than about time to see fat fashionistas in media. This project was first reported on Deadline in 2021. The movie was recently released in the United States on September. 27th and it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 8.8 already!

Empire Waist is the film I wish I’d seen as a teen struggling with my own body image issues. The film is a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it’s also a story that doesn’t shy away from the real challenges we all face when it comes to loving ourselves,” said writer and director Claire Ayoub to Deadline. “Self-love is a journey, and this film is a way for people of all ages to feel less alone in that struggle.”

Ayoub was inspired to write this film based on her 2014 personal essay, “Notes to My Twelve-Year-Old Self,” which was developed through the Black List Annual Feature Lab in 2019 and the Cassian Elwes Independent Screenwriting Fellowship at Sundance 2020 as reported.
