Afro Punk is a yearly 2-day FREE concert in Brooklyn that showcases Black alternative Punk/Heavy Metal/Funk talent. This year D’angelo was the headliner and so many greats performed such as Fishbone, Meshell Ndgeocelo, SZA, Beverly Bond, A Tribe Called Red, Bad Brains, DJ Moma and a host of others.

Also noted were the beautiful and gorgeous seas of Black people enjoying the last fruits of summer despite our mourning for Mike Brown and other unarmed Black men and women due to police brutality. Afro Punk partygoers, in true Brooklyn style looked fresh, stylish and picture worthy.

Fishbone

D’angelo was an hour late! The crowd was getting cranky and there was obviously a sound issue because it took forever for the sound crew to get all the mics and amps working. at 9:30 pm, ?uestlove surprised everyone and sat down at the drums followed by the entire Roots crew and D’angelo. D’angelo covered songs the align with the times and song about police brutality and revolution. His voice is still amazing as ever and he has the best harmony live (besides THE GAWD, PRINCE)

A few casual fans were mad that he didn’t perform Brown Sugar, as if they couldn’t appreciate D’angelo’s soulful tabernacle sound and his appreciation for the funk. However, he did perform Great day in the Mornin!!! Below are a few video clips for you to enjoy. I definitely need to check him again in concert. Let me know what you think!?
